Adaptation II

It was a dark and stormy night…

Well, it was dark anyway. It was around 9pm and a friend and I were headed down an apartment stairwell when the power went out. I was a bit taken aback by this, because there was absolutely no way to see the stairs.

That’s when I learned a little Lebanese trick. My friend whipped out his cell phone and pushed a button so the display would light up. It wasn’t much, but it was definitely enough to see the stairs and get out without any problems.

The downside of this is that my enjoyment of StarTrek has been marginally decreased. Now, whenever a distraught starship captain barks out an order for “Emergency Lights!”, I’m going to visualize the deck crew whipping out their cell phones for a Nokia powered solution.

hehe
yeah I used to have a cell phone from which I could remove the cover. The cover, keypad included, went off like a shell at the push of a button, uncovering the LEDs that backlight the keys on your phone.
Weeee that thing would light up the whole room!

I'v done that very same thing- not because the lights went out but because I was to lazy to turn them on.

The "Palm flashlight" works much the same way. I use my Treo 650 like that nearly every night when I head to bed.

Hmmmm I wonder if this will ruin Star Trek for me?

i've used this trick all the time when can't see front door/car keys, but given the number of power cuts in beirut, i can see why it is a common practice.

my roommate and i did that when the lights went out and we had to find the right breakers in the basement. we really ought to invest in some real flashlights.

also, i'm sure that tricorders would emit the same amound of light...also they've made rocks glow with phaser beams.

I saw a guy use a phone once that actually had an LED flashlight on it. Not much light but it worked in a pinch.

i used to use my pager to wake myself up in the morning. i had an old metal wardrobe and i would set the pager to go off at 6 or whatever and set it to vibrate, then set it on top of the wardrobe. when it went off, there was no way you could sleep through it.
