Anyone have music suggestions for someone who's trying not to think about the fact that someone is watching his family's movements and breaking into our house to steal our stuff?
I'm so sorry to hear you got robbed. I've never experienced it but I can surely imagine that your sense of security has been violated.
First, I don't think it's a matter of someone staking out your apartment building for weeks carefully plotting the break-in. They must have been tipped off by someone who already had incidental knowledge of your daily routines in return for a cut. Are they investigating the concierge at all?
I would also advise you to install a deadbolt system on the door that only you have the key for. If the landlord refused before, I think you can now demand it.
If the prospect that you were watched before is remote it is practically nonexistant now. Still, for the music I would go with "Every breath you take" by Police (not).
Dido to all the sympatric comments! Eek! I can still see the front door of the house in Nashville that got busted into – lots of big shoe prints all over the front door.
I'm thinking that instead of music, you need to watch all the Home Alone movies and possibly Mouse Trap so you can rig up some elaborate booby traps in the apartment as paybacks for any future invasions.
I once thought that maintenance was going into my apartment when I was out. I bought one of those chain locks that has a key you can use to unlock it once the door is partially opened.
Turned out they were...got a nasty note from the rental company a couple weeks later!
Sounds like you need something like that at the very least.
kathleen failed to mention that after they discovered the busted door, dad stomped through the entire house while whistling 'dixie' to scare away any lurkers.
Kate & Suz remember more little details about the Nashville break in than I do. We had almost nothing as far as wordly goods were concerned at the time--the robbers stole a jar of pennies, a used $15 vacuum cleaner, and, sadly, my father's camera he had loaned us so we could take baby pictures of Sam. I remember very well the spooky feeling of having your private space violated. I'm sorry. It will take a while for the feeling to go away, but it will.
As far as music, I agree with Suz--I think a rousing chorus of "Dixie" sung at the top of your lungs would be just the thing!
Sorry to read you're going through crap like this. May I suggest: "nobody home" (pink floyd) or "lost and found" (the nabokov project) ? Ok, I'm outta here.
These will keep you distracted. To be played at full volume: :-)

if you are aware that somebody broke into your house, why would you go in and risk running into them and not jsut call the police right away?

PS: can't believe you get a letter from the rental company basically admitting their employees snoop through your apartment...
I just started making a cd for you, Matthew. I have several songs in mind for your situation, and it might turn into an interesting mix.
How about the "Kill Bill" soundtrack?
