Three days ago, my mother got quite sick. Within about two hours she went from normal to vomiting and bedridden. She couldn't keep anything down, and didn’t want to try for about a day. She then gradually came back up to speed over the course of 8 hours. We hoped it wasn't contagious, but last night the kids and I all started spontaneously throwing up at about 1 am. For the girls this happened at least twice, for me only once. I still went to work today, but didn’t eat anything.
The trouble is that Mary Ann is now showing symptoms. From the previous pattern, she’s probably going to be throwing up within about two hours. My question is, how do you prepare a bathroom for someone who is going to throw up to make the experience as pleasant/less horrible than it otherwise would be? I’ve just cleaned the bathroom, so everything is clean, sparkly and no longer smells like three people just spent the last day throwing up in there. Unfortunately, she really doesn’t like the smell of bleach, so my most powerful (and instinctive) weapon is out.
I think the smell is neutral at this point, but where to go from here? As anyone who watches commercials knows full well, girls love candles in their bathrooms, so I’ve done that. Also, She doesn’t have long hair, so the whole “a friend is someone who holds your hair when you are throwing up” thing isn’t going to apply…
Any ideas on what else I could do?

Well I hate throwing up in general so that lowers your sucess rate- but I also like to just camp out in the bathroom to encourage as little moving as possible - so I bring a pillow and blanket in there and sleep in between boughts. I also like it when Jason sits on the floor with me so I can sleep with my head on his lap and he plays with my hair. The thing is I haven't had the "Throw ups" for years and all this is from when I get nasty cramps which give me the heaves.
I hope everyone feels better soon.
Both actual Ginger and the smell of it is suppose to help nausa.
a bucket....nothing worse than vomiting and having to worry about keeping everything else in...we all went through this in December in combination with nasty diarrhia...I recommend a big bucket....
sorry to hear you are all sick, hope it will be over soon
I suggest sips of lukewarm water or ginger ale (also room temp.) if anyone needs to get liquids in them. They won't make the stomach cramp up quite as much--esp. if it's not cold.
Hope everyone gets better soon!
Yeah, I would recommend the scented candles...nothing too sweet or powdery. I don't know if the Lebanese share the current American passion for scented candles. If I were nauseous, I'd want something more...rich? is that the word? I have a blood orange candle that is really wonderful. Maybe sandalwood or something like that? Just not Country Breeze or Fresh Floral or French Vanilla.
Hope everyone feels better soon!
You're so cute. I was once sick and my boyfriend at the time came in the bathroom after I puked. I thought to see how I was doing, but he actually just asked me to move over so he could pee.
I'm a little late (and de-lurking) but for future knowledge, get some strong mouthwash for her/anyone else. There is nothing worse than being sick and then tasting it for the next several hours. Brushing your teeth does NOT get rid of that taste!
Re-lurking,
Heather
I remember when I got food poisoning while I was visiting home from Utah, katie stayed with me and talked to me while we waited for the puking to stop. SHe didn't leave even though the room stank like puke.
such a nice sister.
oh no!
I hope everyone is better now.

i found the premise of the question you've posed unlike anything i have ever considered. throwing up is such an overwhelmingly unpleasant experience that it seems futile to try to diminish it's awfulness. though ladies often seem oblivious this, growing up with 2 brothers, i am constantly aware that the floor around a toilet is the filthiest place in the house. even though i would never touch bare skin to that part of the floor, i have often sought and found solace lying on that very floor in the throes of nausea. it really didn't even matter that i might have been lying in dried urine. i doubt that in that situation i would have noticed a scented candle. as far as it's-the-thought-that-counts goes, i think it's sweet that you're agonizing over this. but, when megan was prego and puking, i just had to get out of there. i mean if i had stayed around to hold her hair or light her candles, i would have started puking and then it would have turned into that scene from stand by me. when i'm sick, i want to be left alone. i want dramamine or fenargen, not for it's mitigating effect on nausea, but for it's ability to put me to sleep. no way i'm going to work. i don't want visitors. i don't even want my family in the same room. ugh. i HATE throwing up.
You know, that is really sweet.
Gross, but sweet.
It sounds like the Norovirus and it is fast and unpleasant - watch out for a return bout in a couple of days too. You will need to get a strong disinfectatnt and wash down every surface where anyone has vomited and do this several times to prevent any remnant surviving the treatment. All bedclothes, clothes and even the bedrooms and mattresses need to be thoroughly cleaned as well - a disinfectant spray over the mattresses is recommended.
Hope you are all now OK, it is a very unpleasant experience and strikes fast an hard. I find using an isotonic drink helps as it replaces the lost nutrients quite quickly but it should be taken in small quantities at intervals.
Best of luck!
